    December 20, 2010 // No Comments »

While there are literally hundreds of martial arts styles, only a few could practically be used for self defense.  Jiu Jitsu is one style of martial arts that focuses on grappling and restraint techniques but not so much on striking.  For one on one, this is okay but if there are several opponents, it is not the right choice of style.  Karate on the other hand provides more focus on self-defense.  This style offers the opportunity for more hand-to-hand combat.  It is also good for building confidence and discipline.  Taekwondo is known for flashy kicks, which is risky when you need to fight.  As much as those powerful kicks are dangerous, you are left open for a counter attack.  However, the flashy kicks can at times deter would be attackers.  There are other styles such as Kung Fu, Wing Chun Kung, and Krav Maga that you can learn from watching martial arts DVD.
